Inauguration du Monument at Vanikoro c. 1833
By Louis de Sainson (1800 – 1887)
First edition of this superb lithograph of the monument erected for La Perouse at Vanikoro by the officers
of the Astrolable. The great mystery of the La Pérouse’s disappearance after he was last seen on the same
day as Governor Arthur Phillip had enterered Bottany Bay 1788, was solved by Dumont D’Urville. He found
that La Perouse had been stranded on Vanikoro after his vessels had struck an unknown reef in 1788.
