SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I (405-367 BC). Drachm. 4.14gm; Diam 16 mm
Head of Athena facing slightly left, wearing decorated triple-crested Attic
helmet, earring and necklace of pendants; four dolphins around.
Rev: ΣYPAKOΣIΩN / ΛEYKAΣΠIΣ. The hero Leukaspis advancing right,
holding shield and spear; altar to left, ram to right.
SNG ANS 310. Rizzo pl. 47, 1. Jameson I, 175, 810
Unsigned work, but probably by Eukleidas.
Very Fine but some roughness on the obv. probably from water damage.
The advancing warrior on this drachm is identified as the hero Leukaspis based upon the inscription
in the exergue which is rarely visible on most known examples. Diodorus informs us that Leukaspis –
‘he of the white shield’ – was a Sican who was killed in battle by Herakles.
