| The earliest printed map dedicated to New Zealand, although the information dates back to Tasman in 1642. It is a ‘text illustration on page 150 of Atlante Veneto lettered Nuova Zelanda showing coast from Island of Three Kings to Cape Clippige’ Tooley. Includes a spot identified as the antipode to ‘Venezia’ [Venice]. The text on this leaf describes New Zealand, the Horn Islands (Futuna and Alofi), Cocos (Tafahi) and Traitors Island (Niuatoputapu). On the verso (p. 149) Australia, Carpentaria and the Solomon Islands are described. |
